Background 〉 Even though the climate change is having unprecedented effects on both nature and culture, we hardly bring an immediate stop to our "karma." There is a huge digital clock facing Union Square in NYC, called CLIMATE CLOCK — to highlight the remaining time for us to reduce carbon emissions. Unfortunately, we met a bunch of New Yorkers saying, "It's a very meaningful clock that nobody really looks at." It is ironical to see the busy people walking quickly in front of the clock that counts down to the earth's deadline.
Concept 〉 Then how might we encourage people to understand the clock? The team continued to think about how to put people's real lives into the "amount of time" that the CLIMATE CLOCK presents. Six years can be a short or a long amount of time in that sense — as time always does. For example, we say "time flies" when we realize some facts, such as we used iPhone 7, Donald Trump was elected president six years ago, or nobody played with AI-generated art. But it also seems like there is enough time to plant 11.4 billion trees, prevent the 5mm rise of the ocean, or save 70–90% of coral reefs. That's why we reframed a number in the past, present, and future — simply adding conjunctions of timev and following sentenses surrounding the clock — to intent each emotions from memories, hope, and awarness. In short, we believed in the power of stories.

Background 〉 맨하탄에서 유동인구가 가장 많은 곳 중 하나인 유니온스퀘어역에 설치된 “기후 시계"는 우리가 탄소 배출을 줄일 기간이 6년 남짓 남았음을 보여준다. 지하철을 따라 바쁜 걸음을 옮기는 시민들의 모습과 초단위로 줄어드는 이 거대한 마감일이 병치된 모습은 다소 아이러니한 장면을 연출하곤 한다.
Concept 〉 시간은 변화의 척도다. 우리는 같은 시간도 사건마다 매우 다르게 받아들일 수 있다. [Intime]은 이 시계를 지나치는 시민들에게 좀더 진정성 있는 기후위기 이야기를 전달하기 위해 기획되었다. 예를 들어, “6년”이라는 단위는 때때로, 우리가 2017년에 아이폰 7을 사용했다거나, 당시 트럼프가 미국 대통령이 되었다거나, 혹은 아무도 AI 아트를 가지고 놀지는 않았다는 사실로부터는 매우 짧은 것처럼 느껴진다. 그러나 반대로 이만큼의 시간은 현재로부터 114억 그루의 나무를 심거나, 70-90%의 산호초를 살리고, 5mm의 해수면 상승을 막을 만한 기회이기도 하다. 따라서 [Intime]팀은 시계의 앞뒤에 시간접속사 Before / In / After 와 그에 따라 일어날 수 있는 사건들을 나열했다. 과거(Before)로부터 시간의 양을 체감하도록, 기간(In)으로부터 주어진 기회들을 알도록, 미래(After)로부터 기후 위기들을 예측하도록 하는 것이 목적이다.
